    Play Day: Cut-and-Paste

    FREE Event!

Many of us have heard the term Cut-and-Paste referring to a computer technique. Do you know where the term actually comes from?

    Hand created layouts!

We'll be getting out our scissors and tape to cut-and-paste layout designs for calligraphy at our upcoming Play Day on June 2 at CMU from 1 to 5 p.m.

Learn how to take a practice page of calligraphy or a pencil sketch of lettering and turn it into a layout that you can execute as a final hand-lettered project.

This Play Day is appropriate for all lettering styles: pointed pen and broad-edge

    You'll learn:

How to break the lines based on phrasing, alignment, interlinear spacing. You'll be able to take into consideration the tone of the wording to select lettering style, size, color, and emphasized words using the principles of design.

Once you layout out your letters and tape or paste them into place, you'll learn how to transpose the information so you can draw lines on your good paper and write out the quote. You may want to allow for adding a graphic element such as an illustration, a border, or geometric design.

These concepts can be learned by hand and, if you like, then you'll have the knowledge that can be applied when using computer apps such as ProCreate and Photoshop or Pixelmator.

    What to bring:

A practice page of calligraphy with your quote written out. Or bring the quote you are considering - you can sketch it out in pencil in advance or during the Play Day.

Make several xerox copies of your quote in various sizes.

Supplies to bring: Pencil, eraser, calligraphy pens in various sizes, ink and/or gouache you would like to consider using.

Optional supplies (we will have extras): Repositionable tape, t-square or c-thru ruler, x-acto, cutting mat.

    Please RSVP

Free parking is a short walking distance from Margaret Morrison.
